Police: Albany father accidentally shoots 10-year-old daughter; Girl recovering, father arrested

ALBANY – An Albany man accidentally shot his 10-year-old daughter Saturday evening with a gun he illegally possessed, police said.

The girl was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment of a wound police described as non-life-threatening.

Police identified her father as 54-year-old Gregorie Smith and charged him with one count each of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree assault, felonies, police said.

The incident happened just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Second Avenue, police said.

Arriving officers learned the 10-year-old girl inside had suffered a gunshot wound to her back. She was soon taken for treatment.

Police soon determined her father, Smith, had accidentally discharged a weapon he illegally possessed and the bullet hit the girl, police said.

Smith was arraigned Sunday and ordered held without bail.
