WATERFORD – A former Saratoga County Sheriff’s deputy arrested in January on child sex crimes charges is now facing a new count, Saratoga County Sheriff’s officials said.
Steven E. Willetts, 40, now of Waterford, was arrested on one new count of first-degree criminal sexual act against a child under the age of 11, a felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison upon conviction.
Willetts is accused of committing the criminal sexual act against the child in the town of Waterford in the summer of 1997, officials said. There is no statute of limitations on the crime charged.
Willetts, then of Malta, was charged in January with first-degree criminal sexual act and second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child. Those allegations ranged from several years earlier until time leading up to his arrest.
Willetts was then a deputy with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department. He was immediately suspended and now is no longer a deputy, officials said. He had been a deputy since at least 2015.
None of the charges related to any official action by Willetts and the new charge pre-dates his employment, officials said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Willetts was arraigned on the new charge and released on bond. A release did not specify Willetts’ new bond, but his bail was set on the January charges at $25,000.
