Academy of the Holy Names
VALEDICTORIAN PARENTS: Paul Cummins and Heidi Hable
COLLEGE OR OTHER PLANS: I plan to study physics and astronomy at the University of Rochester.
AFTER COLLEGE: I plan to become a physics researcher.
WHAT IS IT LIKE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC: It’s been a surreal experience. 2020 is going to be a year remembered in history for multiple reasons, and I feel it is a truly unique experience to be entering adult life at such a momentous time. Though many have been disappointed by the pandemic’s effects on our senior year and our graduations, including myself, a silver lining is that because this year is so strikingly different, it in turn makes graduating this year more memorable than it otherwise might have been.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CLASSMATES THIS SEMESTER: Especially in the face of the pandemic, my fellow classmates displayed a great deal of resilience and adaptability. We had to adapt to living through a computer screen, to online classes, online tests, including AP exams, and online club activities when possible. We continued to give these things our best effort, even when these systems were confusing or difficult to use. While I am certain that these traits have always been present in my class, without the pandemic I might have never seen them in action.
WHAT IS A MEMORY OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR YOU’LL NEVER FORGET: In the fall, I participated in our production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The process of rehearsing and performing the show was very enjoyable thanks to the amazing cast and directors, and it is one of my favorite productions that I have been a part of.
WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL: I will miss my friends the most. I have met some amazing people during my time at Holy Names and I will miss them very much after we graduate.
WHAT’S IN YOUR MUSIC PLAYER: I am not someone who listens to music very often and my tastes tend to fluctuate. Recently, I have been listening to choral music more often, specifically performances by the group VOCES8 and other similar groups.
BEAT PART ABOUT GRADUATING: Graduating marks the start of a new chapter in my life. While I will miss Holy Names, I am more excited to see what the future holds for me in college and beyond
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU: Something that inspires me is the sheer vastness of our universe. There is so much out there that we have yet to discover and so many phenomena we have yet to explain. I want to study physics because I want to be part of making those discoveries and figuring out those explanations one day.
