Ballston Spa High School
PARENTS: Sanford and Melissa Doyle COLLEGE OR OTHER PLANS: Biology major at MIT
AFTER COLLEGE: Graduate school
WHAT IS IT LIKE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC: It’s a bit strange, especially since online learning has made the last few months feel like an extended vacation. I wouldn’t say I dislike most of the adaptations we’ve made, though. It’s a good time to be an introvert.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CLASSMATES THIS SEMESTER: We are stronger and more resilient than we think. Whether we’re ziplining in a cloud forest canopy (see below) or navigating online learning, we can overcome our fears and whatever obstacles we face.
WHAT IS A MEMORY OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR YOU’LL NEVER FORGET: I had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica as part of a school trip. Coatis (little mammals) are so adorable! ¡Pura Vida!
WHAT YOU WILL MISS MOST ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL: Getting to see my closest friends and amazing teachers every day, and playing in our Symphonic Orchestra.
WHAT’S IN YOUR MUSIC PLAYER: Quite a variety of music, actually. Everything from modern violinists like Lindsey Stirling and acapella covers by artists like Peter Hollens, to book-inspired songs and the soundtracks from my favorite shows. There’s also Christian music and some Celtic and Spanish songs in there.
BEST PART ABOUT GRADUATING: MIT offers many opportunities to get involved with things that I’ve wanted to try for a while, but never had the chance to do- like taking archery class. I’m looking forward to these kinds of opportunities in the next chapter of my life.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU: I have a number of sources of inspiration, but among the people who inspire me most are my parents — they’ve worked hard so that I could focus on my academics, and encouraged me throughout my school career, even while dealing with major health issues. My father was also valedictorian of his class, which motivated me to try for the same.
