Class of 2020: Emma Birsen – Salutatorian, Middleburgh High School

Emma Birsen
Emma Birsen

Middleburgh High School

Emma Birsen

PARENTS: Robin Grupinski and Joseph Birsen

COLLEGE OR OTHER PLANS: I will be attending Colgate University and majoring in either neuroscience or mathematics

AFTER COLLEGE: I will hopefully get a stable job (I’m not yet sure what I want that job to be) and eventually start a family

WHAT IS IT LIKE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC: It is definitely different I can tell you that. While it is kind of relieving getting a break from everything (and also not having to wake up at 6:30 a.m. every day), it is also sad not being able to finish out high school surrounded by my friends and teachers. I have had some of what was supposed to be the best part of senior year ripped away from me, like my school musical and my history club trip to Spain, but I have hopes that our faculty and staff will make our graduation “ceremony” as special as they can.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CLASSMATES THIS SEMESTER: I learned who my real friends are and who was only my “school friend.”

WHAT IS A MEMORY OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR THAT YOU’LL NEVER FORGET: Learning ridiculous tiktok dances with my friends during lunch.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL: Definitely seeing my friends every day.

WHAT’S IN YOUR MUSIC PLAYER: Some of my favorite artists include: LANY, Rex Orange County, Frank Ocean, and Ruel.

BEST PART ABOUT GRADUATING: Finally getting recognized for all of my accomplishments.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU: I am inspired by people that are sure of who they are as a person.
