FONDA — Stewart Friesen kept up his stellar record at Fonda Speedway this season Saturday night, winning his third Sunoco Modified feature of the year as the track presented its Red, White and Blue Special.
Friesen has won every event he has raced at Fonda this season, missing out only a week ago when prior commitments kept him away from the track. Nick Stone, who picked up the $1,776 purse in the Pro Stock feature Saturday, also has three wins in four weeks.
Other winners on Saturday evening at Fonda were Cody Clark in the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, Dylan Eldred in the Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman, Jason Samrov in the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stocks, Joe Trudeau (Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series Antique), Kyle Hoard (Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series Replica Modified), Mike Francisco (Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series Replica Sportsman), and John Roese (Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series Replica Late Model).
Craig Hanson took the lead early in the 30-lap modified main event following an initial caution before the field reached turn one. Hanson was followed by Roger Henion Jr. and Adam McAuliffe. Friesen, who started on the sixth row, made some moves and got into the top four by lap 13.
Hanson, McAuliffe and Josh Hohenforst were at the front and pulling away from the rest of the field when a caution came on on lap 14. Shortly after the restart, Friesen moved from fourth to second.
Two laps later, Friesen got by Hanson for the lead and pulled away from the field as the race quickly became for second. The second spot ended up being a fierce duel between Hanson, Larry Wight and Jessica Friesen, who started 10th but made a late run through the field.
Stewart Friesen overcame a late caution flag to pick up the win, followed by Wight, Jessica Friesen, Hanson and defending track champion Rocky Warner.
“You could race all over the track tonight,” Stewart Friesen said in victory lane as his son Parker did a dance on the roof with the checkered flag in hand. “It’s nice to see fans back here at Fonda tonight and great to see Jess get a great third-place finish.”
Clark took the lead at the halfway point of the Crate 602 Sportsman feature and opened up a straightaway advantage. A caution tightened up the field on lap 17, but Clark held off the challenges of Chad Edwards on the single-file restart to earn his first win of the season. Edwards, Thomas VanVorst, Tucker O’Connor and JaMike Sowle completed the top five. VanVorst was later disqualified in post-race inspection, moving Tim Hartman Jr. into the top five.
Eldred captured his second career win in Fonda’s Limited Sportsman division, leading all the way. Spencer Rapp finished second, followed by John Young, Clayton DuMond and Yule Cook.
Stone took the lead on lap 13 of the Pro Stock feature and pulled away to his third win of the season and 49th of his career ahead of Luke Horning, Chuck Dumblewski, Devon Camenga and Josh Coonradt.
“This track has been different almost every time we get on it, but we’ve been hitting the setup each time,” Stone said. “Tonight, I just kept the car straight and went for it.”
Defending Street Stock track champion Jason Samrov was the winner of the 15-lap feature event on Saturday after leading every lap of the event for his first win of the season and the 14th of his career in the division over Al Relyea, Dave Horning Sr., Josh Samrov and Lou Gancarz.
