Albany Police: Saturday homicide victim identified as Schenectady man

ALBANY – The man killed in an early Saturday Albany shooting was identified Tuesday as a Schenectady man, police said.

Jose Moreno, 31, of Schenectady, was shot and killed at Grand Street and Ash Grove Place, police said.

The investigation remained ongoing Tuesday and anyone with information was asked to contact detectives at 518-462-8039.

Police were called to the area of Grand Street and Ash Grove Place at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting. Thy arrived to find Moreno with a gunshot wound to his torso, police said.

Moreno was taken by paramedics to Albany Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.

Moreno’s death marked Albany’s fifth homicide since the beginning of June, though police have made only one homicide arrest. The Albany County Sheriff’s Office and state police have assigned additional personnel to Albany to try to stop the violence.

One of the previous shooting victims was from Niskayuna 34-year-old Dwayne Fenner. He was shot and killed June 18 on Third Street in Albany. 

Saturday’s homicide was also one of two shootings that day. The second shooting Saturday happened at around 12:40 p.m. on Second Street between Judson Street and North Lake Avenue, police said. An 18-year-old suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg in that shooting and was transported to Albany Medical Center. That incident also remains under investigation.

Police also reported another shooting Monday morning. In that shooting, a 14-year-old entered the Albany Medical Center emergency room with a gunshot wound to his leg. He told police he had been shot while walking in the area of Ontario and Benson streets, police said.
