The CAA is expected to announce Friday that it won't play football in 2020.

According to multiple reports Thursday night, the Colonial Athletic Association will not play football in 2020 because of concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. An announcement is expected Friday.

That league includes UAlbany, which plays in the America East Conference for nearly all of its other sports. Reports Thursday night, too, said a decision from the America East on the status of its fall sports could come as soon as Friday.

Attempts to reach UAlbany athletic officials were unsuccessful.

Already, UAlbany football lost its scheduled season-opening game Sept. 5 against Delaware State. The MEAC, to which Delaware State belongs, canceled its fall football season Thursday.

It’s possible, according to reports, that CAA football programs could attempt to play seasons independent of conference play. CAA powerhouse James Madison, last season’s FCS national runner-up, is reportedly expected to explore that opportunity.

UAlbany finished 9-5 last season and won its first-ever FCS playoff game.
