“Operation Hardhat” leads to 85 Northway tickets

Troopers dressed as highway workers to nab speeders and others

SARATOGA COUNTY — A sting operation in which state troopers dressed as road construction workers were in work zones on the Northway in the last 10 days has resulted in 85 tickets being issued, state police said.

“Operation Hardhat,” done in partnership between state police and the state Department of Transportation, issued the tickets for various work zone violations on July 10 at construction work zones in Warren County, and on July 14 at work zones in Saratoga County.

“Based on the initial success of the initiative, plans are in place to roll out additional operations throughout the summer,” according to a statement from state police Troop G.

The tickets issued included 64 for speeding in a work zone, two for cellphone violations, one for making an unsafe lane change, one for failure to obey a traffic control flaggers, and 17 for other vehicle and traffic violations, troopers said.

Work zones generally have reduced speed limits. State police said motorists are also reminded to move over a lane if safely possible, or slow down significantly, whenever there are police, emergency medical or fire response vehicles of maintenance and construction vehicles operating on the highway.
