Wednesday’s third race, the 1 1/16-mile Lubash Stakes, scheduled to be run on turf, is headlined by Cross Border (1-2). The ridgeling is a dominating morning line favorite despite coming off a fifth-place performance in the Grade I Manhattan Stakes on the Fourth of July.

The order of finish is not indicative of his performance in that race, as he set the pace and led for the majority of the 10 furlongs, dueled in the stretch, and was eventually overcome amidst the pack of finishers, each a length or less ahead of him at the line. For this race, he drops 1 1/2 furlongs to a distance at which he won at Saratoga last July.

Dating back to 2013, Saratoga stakes races at route distance on the turf tend to be won by the entrant with the best overall trainer record for the year, and Cross Border fits that criteria with trainer Michael Maker successful in 19% of his races in 2020. Todd Pletcher has also been successful in 19% of his races this year, and his entrant, Blewitt (2-1) is expected to be the most likely challenger. Blewitt is making his first appearance on turf, and it will be interesting to see how he responds. If the race moves back to dirt, the expected finish of this pair can be swapped.
