Construction on three of Saratoga Springs High School’s outdoor athletic facilities, including its new multi-purpose turf field, is nearly complete according to athletic director Nick McPartland.
“Everything looks tremendous. Everything came out better than advertised,” McPartland said Friday afternoon. “Based on the things I saw on paper, I am blown away with the final product.”
Along with the finishing details on the turf field behind the high school, the final touches are being put on the football facility in front of the high school and the baseball field at East Side Recreation Park. Those endeavors are part of a $15.6 million Great Outdoors Capital Project district voters approved in May of 2018.
“The playing field itself is pretty much done,” McPartland said of the new turf field that includes lights and a large scoreboard. “The turf is down and it looks great. We’re tying up loose ends.”
That field will be used primarily by Saratoga soccer, field hockey and lacrosse teams, and by students in physical education classes. Football can also be played on the field, though the front field remains the varsity teams’ primary site.
“So many programs will benefit,” McPartland said.
The turf field will allow spring sports teams to get outside earlier than in the past for practice sessions.
“Our coaches, kids and administration are excited about the athletic facilities,” McPartland said. “We just need a few tweaks.”
The grass football field has a new irrigation system, while a new concession stand and bathroom facility sets outside the playing area.
Artificial turf has been put down on the infield of the baseball field at East Side Rec, and several upgrades have been made to the bleacher section.
“We have also addressed the home plate and backstop dimensions to make them comparable to other parks,” McPartland said.
