The field for Wednesday’s Grade II Adirondack Stakes, a sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs over dirt, looks evenly matched at the top, with four contenders vying to grab their first stakes victory.
Make Mischief (9-5) opens as the favorite in part because of her second-place finish in the Grade III Schuylerville Stakes on Opening Day. Despite her six-length loss, she and the other money finishers were each at least 10 lengths ahead of the remainder of the field.
Lilac Lace (6-1) demonstrated equally good speed in her maiden victory at Keenland on July 12, closing to pass the top three in the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths as a 19-1 long shot.
However, races like Wednesday’s tend to favor entries who display early speed, and the best in the field belongs to Lucifer’s Lair (3-1). She was not challenged at the end of her race, though, and may not have proven too much by winning her 5 1/2-furlong sprint at 1:11.3.
Of the group, I am most drawn to Thoughtfully (2-1). She closed well, furthering herself from the pack in the stretch en route to her maiden victory at Churchill Downs on June 11. Her breeze time improved over her last two workouts, and she is a 2-year-old trained by Steven Assmusen, who has the best record in the country when working with 2-year-olds.
