The cobwebs will need to be shaken off prior to the running of the Union Avenue Handicap, run in Thursday’s ninth race over seven furlongs of dirt, as none of the entrants have run competitively in at least a month and a half.
Ratajkowski (6-5) looks to be the most game of the six, posting a bullet five-furlong workout at 1:01.3 at Fairgrounds last Saturday. She won her last ungraded stakes race, the 1-mile Circle Eye Stakes, on June 18, finishing a neck ahead of Mrs. Orb (6-1).
In that race, Mrs. Orb nearly closed a two-length gap in the stretch. With one less length to work with, Ratajkowski can run a similar race with less chance of being caught late.
Newly Minted (7-5) will be her most likely challenger. If the Linda Rice-trained filly does not exit the gate as the favorite Thursday, it will be the first time since her maiden race since that happened. Though not raced since March 8, Rice-trained Thoroughbreds tend to run well off a layoff, and I would suspect the same will happen Thursday.
