Sheehan, Hawkins announce Albany Policing Reform and Reinvention Collaborative

Categories: News

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Police Chief Eric Hawkins announced Albany’s Policing Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Wednesday, an effort that will review and make recommendations to policing policies and procedures.

Recommendations will be “tailored to the specific needs of the communities that have been disproportionately impacted by structural racism,” according to a release, and will meet every Tuesday starting next week at 6 p.m.

The collaborative’s initial meeting will cover topics such as policing history, implicit bias, APD’s current policing strategies and will be live streamed and recorded. The collaborative is also aiming to create topic-specific working groups at the end of meetings, according to the release, with each holding a public meeting to take in information from Albany residents. The groups will then compile the recommendations, release them to the public for comment and be presented to the Albany Common (as required by NYS Executive Order 203) after the Collaborative looks it over. The collaborative’s work will conclude on April 21.
