NISKAYUNA – Eleven vehicles have been stolen and numerous residents have reported items stolen from cars in recent months, police said Tuesday.
Police released the numbers as they encouraged residents to ensure their cars and garages are locked.
“We cannot encourage residents strongly enough to secure their cars and property,” police said in a release. “Some of these incidents have occurred inside garages where the garage doors were left up or unsecured. Valuables should be removed from cars or hidden out of sight. People should also turn on outside lights.”
In all the cases, vehicles were left unlocked. In cases where vehicles were stolen, keys had been left in the vehicles, police said.
“There was no forced entry in any of the incidents reported,” police wrote.
Items taken included loose change, cash, credit cards and other valuables. The department is also investigating instances where bicycles and motorized scooters have been stolen.
The thefts are believed to involve multiple suspects on foot or on bicycle, police said.
The thefts have also hit all neighborhoods in town and have been committed in the early morning and overnight hours. Police noted other areas of the region have reported similar thefts.
“More than anything else, we are asking people to call 911 if they see something suspicious or out of place,” police wrote. “Too often people hesitate to call 911 because they feel it is really not an emergency, only to find out later that a crime was being committed.”
The department made arrests in a similar rash of thefts at the end of May, police noted. There is no information to believe that the more recent incidents are connected, police said.
