High winds damage property in Stillwater

STILLWATER — A windstorm ripped through the eastern Saratoga County town of Stillwater Saturday, causing property damage and downed power lines.

Carl Zeilman, commissioner of Emergency Services in Saratoga County, said most of the property damage from the wind was isolated to McDermott Road, including one trailer that was badly damaged.

“Most of the damage that we’re seeing is cosmetic,” Zeilman said. “For the most part, we’re seeing rooftop structures that have been dislodged from a couple of homes, and we’re seeing trees and wires down.”

Zeilman said no injuries have been reported from the storm as of Saturday evening. He said emergency personnel from Saratoga County, the town and New York state have responded to the damage, and were helping the residents of McDermott Road with a cleanup effort.

“We can’t confirm a tornado touchdown yet, but I’m being told the National Weather Service will come out and make a determination as early as tomorrow morning,” Zeilman said.

Ingrid Amberger, a meteorologist with the National Weather service, said on Saturday a warm front moved to the north of the Capital Region in the morning, leaving a very humid air mass behind it, generated by the remnants of Hurricane Laura in the southern part of the U.S.

“And we have a cold front coming in from the west, which brought showers and thunderstorms that have produced large hail and damaging wind gusts,” she said. “What has been favorable for storms to become tornadic is the low level winds which have provided the conditions for the storms to rotate, and once you have rotating storms you can get tornados and that happened across the Capital District area, the Mohawk Valley and into Saratoga County [Saturday].”

A different severe thunderstorm passed through Schenectady a couple of hours later. Winds there brought down at least one large tree on Plymouth Avenue. As of 9 p.m. Saturday, there were two power outages affecting 77 customers, according to National Grid’s online power outage map.
