The Lucky Coin Stakes will be an all-out sprint over 5 1/2 miles on the Mellon Turf, and the best early, consistent sprinter should be the one to prevail on Sunday.
Shekky Shebaz (8-5) is expected to be the favorite, and has justified that by excelling in short sprints. The 5-year-old gelding is 9-3-2-2 at Sunday’s distance and finished a close third in the Grade III Troy Stakes, though his official finish was moved to second through a disqualification.
However, for all the great sprinting Shekky Shebaz has run, he has not wired the field in almost a year, which is something I believe that Gidu (5-2) can do Sunday.
Gidu has stuck to 1 mile races for the most part and he ran 1 1/16 miles his last time out. In each of his last two starts, he has been well ahead of the pack at the second call. In each instance, he has burned out before the finish. Now he drops 3 furlongs off that length and has the opportunity to set his own pace.
