The Colonial Council is moving both the soccer and cross country seasons to the Fall II sports season that starts in March, the league announced in a press release Friday.
With the league’s decision to move girls’ swimming and diving to Fall II confirmed earlier this week, that leaves golf and girls’ tennis as the only “low” risk fall sports in the Colonial Council that will begin Monday when the Fall I season begins.
The release states: “This late announcement is due in part to ensuring all aspects of athletics and student athletes’ safety was assessed, with input from as many school district representatives as possible before coming to a final decision. In addition to safety factors, the availability of transportation, schools’ practice and playing fields were also taken into consideration.”
The Colonial Council joins the bulk of leagues across Section II in moving the boys’ and girls’ soccer season to Fall II because of concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic. The league’s soccer and cross country seasons will begin March 1 along with seasons for the three “high” risk sports — football, volleyball and the fall competitive cheerleading season — that were moved to the Fall II season by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
