COLONIE – An early Monday traffic stop led to the discovery of a handgun and the arrest of a Schenectady man, police said.
Jaquan D. Lewis, 19, of Schenectady was arrested on one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, along with misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation, police said.
Police stopped Lewis just before 1 a.m. on Troy-Schenectady Road, near Vly Road for a vehicle and traffic violation, police said. Officers discovered his license was suspended and he had a small bag of marijuana in his pocket, police said.
A search of the vehicle then uncovered a Smith and Wesson .38 handgun loaded with six rounds, police said. The origin of the handgun was being investigated Monday, police said. Lewis does not have a pistol permit and can’t legally possess a handgun, police said.
The gun was the sixth illegal handgun found and seized by Colonie Police in the past two weeks and 22nd this year, police said.
Lewis was arraigned and released to probation supervision to return to court later.
