NEW SCOTLAND – A Richmondville man intentionally set fire to his own car in New Scotland Sunday, state police said.

William C. Sossei, IV, 37, of Richmondville, was arrested and charged with one count each of third-degree arson, a felony, and misdemeanor reckless endangerment, police said.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Troopers received a call then for a vehicle fire in New Scotland. After the Onesquethaw Fire Department extinguished the blaze, the fire chief and troopers examined the vehicle. They then found several indications that the fire had been started intentionally, state police said.

Fire personnel then reported that they observed a man hiding in the bushes near the scene. Troopers later identified that man as Sossei, the registered owner of the vehicle, police said. Troopers soon arrested Sossei.

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office and the Bethlehem Police Department assisted.

Sossei was arraigned and released under supervision. He is due back in court later.
