Troopers: Driver killed by falling tree in Clifton Park

CLIFTON PARK – A driver was killed by a falling tree as storms swept through the area Wednesday afternoon, state police said.

William J. Oates, 24, city of residence unavailable, was driving on Pierce Road when the tree came down and collided with his vehicle, state police said.

Troopers were called to the one-car crash at about 4:23 p.m., state police said. The tree struck Oates’ vehicle in the area of Ushers Road.

Oates was transported to Saratoga Hospital where he was pronounced dead, state police said. No other injuries were reported in the incident. The investigation was ongoing.

The tree fell as a line of strong storms made their way through the region with wind guys into the 60 mph range, taking down trees and power lines throughout the area, according to the National Weather Service.
