Four former Union College hockey players re-signed professional contracts with organizations in the National Hockey League during the first week of free agency.
The Colorado Avalanche announced on Friday that the team had signed forward Mike Vecchione to a one-year contract ($700,000).
Vecchione spent the 2019-20 season with the American Hockey League’s San Antonio Rampage, recording 36 points on 21 goals and 15 assists in 61 games to lead the club in goals and finish second in points. Signed by the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in March of, 2017, Vecchione has skated in two NHL games, both for Philadelphia.
The Washington Capitals signed Daniel Carr to a one-year, two-way contract ($700,000/$415,000), the team announced on Sunday. Carr is currently playing for HC Lugano of the Swiss Hockey League and will remain with the team until the commencement of the Capitals’ 2020-21 training camp.
Carr played in 11 games with the Nashville Predators last season, scoring one goal. He recorded 50 points (23-27) in 47 games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL.
In 238 career AHL games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, the St. John’s IceCaps, the Laval Rocket, the Chicago Wolves and Milwaukee, Carr has 211 points (104-107).
Carr has appeared in at least six NHL games in each of the last five seasons between stints with the Montreal Canadiens, the Vegas Golden Knights and Nashville.
The New York Rangers signed goalie Keith Kinkaid to a two-year contract ($1.65 million), the club announced on Friday.
Kinkaid has appeared in 157 career NHL games over parts of seven seasons (2012-13; 2014-15 – 2019-20) with New Jersey and Montreal, posting a 65-56-20 record, along with a 2.95 goals-against average, a .905 save percentage and seven shutouts.
He appeared in 41 games and made 38 starts in each of his last two full seasons in the NHL (2017-18 and 2018-19), establishing career-highs in both categories. Kinkaid established a career-high in wins with 26 in 2017-18, helping the Devils advance to the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and he posted a 2.77 GAA and a .913 SV% during the season.
The 6-3, 186-pounder split this past season between the NHL and the AHL while in the Montreal Canadiens organization.
Another former Union goalie, Troy Grosenick, signed with the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings signed Troy Grosenick to a one-year contract ($700,000), the team announced on Saturday.
Grosenick spent last season with the AHL Milwaukee Admirals, posting a 20-9-3 record, a 2.29 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and two shutouts in 33 games.
He has compiled a 132-89-15 record in 254 games over the last seven seasons in the AHL with the Worcester Sharks, San Jose Barracuda and Milwaukee. In 2017, he participated in the AHL All-Star Game, won the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Goaltender and was an AHL First Team All-Star.
