Falling tree hits van in Niskayuna; Family briefly trapped, child sent to hospital

NISKAYUNA – A child was taken to the hospital Sunday after a tree fell on a van in Niskayuna, police said.

The child’s injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, police said. The child was taken to Albany Medical Center.

Five others in the van, including three other children, escaped without serious injury, according to police and information available at the scene.

The call came in at 12:54 p.m. on Birchwood Lane, just off Troy-Schenectady Road. Niskayuna Fire District 2 responded.

Wind gusts at the time hit about 36 mph as recorded at the Albany International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to hitting the van, the branch also hit the house, causing some damage to the roof area, and a car.
