The Shenendehowa boys’ soccer team that will be among the favorites in the upcoming Suburban Council tournament needed a pair of second-half goals to avoid a major upset Tuesday at Schenectady.

Sean Albagli scored the game-winner for the Plainsmen with eight minutes left after the squads at opposite ends of the league standings exchanged penalty kick goals earlier in the contest at Larry Mulvaney field.

“They really wanted this game,” Schenectady coach Andrew Rojas said. “They’re sick of getting run over.”

Iddrisu Harua, who missed Schenectady’s previous two games with an ankle injury, scored on a first-half penalty kick to give Schenectady the lead as well as momentum.

“We missed some opportunities in the first half and all of a sudden, it gets harder,” Shenendehowa coach Jon Bain said. “They [Schenectady] start to play better and they get a goal, and now we’re chasing the game.”

Zak Smith scored for the Plainsmen early in the second half when he unleashed a penalty kick that was stopped by Bilal Shohatee, and popped in the rebound.

Smith also assisted on Albagli’s one-touch, close-range goal with a 35-yard free kick from the sideline that sailed into the box.

“It was a great finish by Sean, and the ball [by Smith] was perfectly placed,” Bain said.

Shohatee finished with 15 saves for 1-8-0 Schenectady. Noah Flint made one stop for 8-0-1 Shenendehowa.

The Plainsmen had beaten Schenectady in 2019 and 2018 by a combined score of 13-0.

“It was a fun game to watch and coach,” Rojas said. “I am proud of my team.”

Michael Puccioni’s second-half goal enabled Niskayuna to tie Columbia 1-1.

Maria Tsakalakos and Mia Achcet scored goals in the second half as Niskayuna turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 Suburban Council girls’ soccer win over Columbia.

Riley Grimm and Maya Kerr split the goals as Guilderland defeated Troy 4-0.

Jewel Tanksley led a balanced  Shaker offense with two goals and an assist in the Bisons’ 9-1 win over Saratoga Springs.

Glens Falls and South Glens Falls advanced in the girls’ Foothills Council tennis tournament with 4-3 wins over Amsterdam and Hudson Falls, respectively.
