Schenectady native Nick Barnes doesn’t have to look very far for bowling motivation. He sees it staring back at him affectionately every day.

“I’m definitely getting pretty serious about my game now,” said the 24-year-old Barnes. “I married into a bowling family. My family wasn’t that much into bowling, but my wife [the former Kaitlyn Goodermote] and her family are very serious about the sport, so I had to step up.”

Barnes notched an important milestone in his game improvement when he rolled his first 800 triple en route to a career-best 1,051 four-game series last week in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league at Towne Bowling Academy. Included in that set was his second perfect game in consecutive matches after rolling a 300 in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday night, also at Towne BA. He now has three perfect games.

“My previous best triple was a 794, and it feels amazing to finally get that first 800,” Barnes said. “I’ve come close so many times. I had a 793 once, and I missed a 7-pin in the middle of a game.”

Barnes bowled on the Schenectady High School team, but he was better known for his baseball talents, as he pitched and also played both outfield and shortstop for the Patriots.

“It was kind of cool playing against guys like Garrett Whitley [Niskayuna] and Ian Anderson [Shenendehowa] and watching them go on to have pro careers,” Barnes said.

Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer and retired Schenectady police officer Keith Lawyer helped get Barnes started in bowling after excelling in baseball.

“I remember way back when my parents worked at the police department, and Keith Lawyer drilled my first ball for me,” Barnes recalled. “I definitely got some great pointers from him. When I was going through a funk, he watched how I released the ball and gave me some tips and tricks on how to follow through correctly and how to put more hand in the ball. He also helped me with making 10-pins and how to adjust to the transition on the lanes.”

Barnes said his background in baseball has helped him handle the pressure of bowling in a couple of the area’s best scratch leagues.

“Through baseball, I know a little about how to handle the pressure and how to push yourself,” he said. “I was nervous at first bowling against so many great bowlers in both the leagues at Towne. There is definitely some pressure that goes with that. But I’ve also been getting some pointers from my wife. I can’t see how I’m bowling, but having someone there to record videos helps me to see what I’m doing wrong. It’s funny, because when I first started bowling, I slid on my wrong foot. But eventually, after practicing over and over, I was able to switch my sliding foot to the way it’s supposed to be.”

Barnes is currently averaging 220 in the City League and 238 in the Mixed Doubles league, where his wife and teammate is averaging a very respectable 210. His best previous average was a 223 Monday nights.

“My goals are to become more consistent with my game, especially with the mental aspect,” said Barnes, who studied at Hudson Valley Community College and is now studying informatics, with a concentration in data analytics, at the University at Albany. He also works full-time as a Samsung consultant at Best Buy.

“Being around technology all the time is fun for me,” he said.

“I want to improve my average and bowl in more tournaments,” Barnes added. “To do that, I’ve got to get better with the mental game. When I miss spares, I tend to get down on myself. Plus, the house shots we use in league are pretty consistent. When there are sports shots put out in tournaments, there is a lot more on the line, including a lot more pressure.”
