BALLSTON SPA – The holidays are looking a bit different at Ellms Christmas Tree Farm this year.
Instead of the traditional visits from Santa and his elves, the farm will host Rudolph’s Movie Experience and Pyrotechnics Show starting Friday through December 22. The drive-in style show is slated to include a shortened version of the classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” program, followed by a special effects show.
It follows the farm’s Pumpkin Glow and Light Show Drive-thru Experience, an event that the farm started because of the pandemic.
“During the past year, we have been so happy to be able to share the farm with the community to offer fun and safe activities for all ages to enjoy. We are very much looking forward to putting on a holiday event and creating new traditions for all,” said owner Garth Ellms.
The Christmas Tree Farm spans 240 acres and is perhaps an ideal setting for showcasing classic holiday films. Shortly before the drive-in film starts, attendees can play Rudolph trivia. The modified version of “Rudolph” will run about 11 minutes, followed by the pyrotechnics show. In total, the show will be just under half an hour long.
“[We wanted] to have something fun, something that really evokes the holiday spirit and has a real wow factor at the end for people to be mesmerized, entertained and excited and leave with a full belly of donuts and hot cocoa and a nice, warm feeling in your heart,” said Carmelita Kimmy Jaski, the farm’s communications director.
While the farm would traditionally kick off the holiday season after Thanksgiving with Santa and his elves parachuting onto the grounds, they’ve had to find other ways to celebrate safely. With the Rudolph Movie Experience, attendees can remain in their cars while partaking in a new holiday tradition.
“This is the first year that we’ll be hosting a nighttime activity on the Christmas Tree Farm,” Jaski said. “It’s pretty cool that while you’re watching one of the most classic, beloved stories of all time, you’re surrounded by 240 acres of gorgeous Christmas trees.”
The show runs Thursday-Sunday each week and there are three different time slots each evening, including 5:30, 6:45 and 8 p.m. There are several different packages available, some including seasonal foods like cider donuts and peppermint kettle corn. Tickets run from $39.99 per car to $74.99.
Ellms Christmas Tree Farm is located at 468 Charlton Road, Ballston Spa. The Christmas tree farm will kick off the season on Friday with fresh-cut trees and cut your own trees available. Hours are Friday and Monday 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit ellmsfarms.com.
