ADIRONDACKS — The state Department of Environmental Conservation and Friends of Camp Santanoni have cancelled this week’s weekend ski-in events to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

The three Winter Weekend events — on holiday weekends in January and in February and March — have been held for the last seven years. The events give DEC a chance to show off an easy five-mile ski to a historic Adirondack Great Camp located on Newcomb Lake in Newcomb.

This year, organizers determined the indoor spaces used for the events are too small to safely accommodate typical attendance numbers under current health guidelines. DEC and its partners hope to resume these popular winter events in 2022.

The historic property remains open to the public, by ski or snowshoe from an entrance off Route 28N in Newcomb, with the trail along a dirt road into the property. Buildings at the camp, normally open to the public, are closed.
