For nearly two minutes, neither UAlbany nor Fordham scored in Tuesday’s non-conference women’s basketball game.

Then, Fordham got going.

The Great Danes?

They never really did.

In a 71-42 loss at Fordham’s Rose Hill Gym, UAlbany fell behind early and never led. Fordham (3-2) started the contest on a 22-4 run, and UAlbany (2-4) trailed 37-11 at halftime. The Great Danes outscored Fordham by seven points in the third quarter, but Fordham answered with a 22-12 fourth.

“We obviously didn’t have the outcome we wanted [Tuesday], but I’m so proud of the effort we showed in the second half, and in the third quarter, in particular,” UAlbany head coach Colleen Mullen said via a statement issued from the school’s athletic department. “We really bounced back and showed a lot of toughness.  We talked at halftime about trying to win some more 50-50 balls, and focus on getting stops. “

Fordham limited Helene Haegerstrand, UAlbany’s leading scorer on the season, to two points on 1 of 5 shooting. Ellen Hahne led UAlbany with 13 points and was the team’s only double-digit scorer.

For Fordham, Anna DeWolfe had 21 points, while Kendell Heremaia had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

UAlbany is next scheduled to play Jan. 2-3 vs. Vermont. Tuesday’s game was the Great Danes’ sixth in 12 days.

“All these games that we’ve played, and played so quickly, will certainly prepare us for the America East,” Mullen said. “It’s been a wild two weeks, but it’s been a great experience for us.”
