Schenectady County seeks nominees for Older New Yorker awards

SCHENECTADY — The Schenectady County Legislature is seeking nominees for the Karen B. Johnson Schenectady County Older New Yorker of the Year awards, sponsored by the county Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services.

The awards, named after the former Schenectady mayor and county legislator who died in 2019, were created to recognize older adults in the community who have offered their time and experience to worthwhile projects and causes, either professionally or as volunteers.

“This year our community has relied on the help of volunteers more than ever — from food distribution, to sewing masks, taking care of neighbors and those on quarantine, and now helping administer vaccinations,” said County Legislator Sara Mae Pratt, D-Alplaus. “We encourage our residents to nominate seniors who have dedicated their time to helping others either professionally or through volunteering.”

Anyone can make a nomination. To be eligible, people must be Schenectady County residents who are at least 60 years old and have been involved in organizations or projects that enhance the lives of others.

Nomination forms are available at or at the county Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services, 107 Nott Terrace, Suite 305, Schenectady NY 12308. The deadline to submit nominations is Feb. 19.
