In the Pocket: Hometown is where the heart is for Wigand

Shenendehowa High School graduate Billy Wigand, 30, has 31 perfect games. He has rolled an honor score on every pair of lanes at Hometown in Mechanicville.

Talented and dedicated Billy Wigand competes in four weekly leagues at three different bowling centers, but if he could buy Hometown Lanes, he certainly would. He already bowls like he owns the place.

The 30-year-old Shenendehowa High School graduate is averaging 234 in the extremely competitive Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday nights at Towne Bowling Academy. That in itself is a notable achievement. But he seems to be a lot more comfortable on what has become his “home house” on Hudson River Road in Mechanicville.

On Tuesday nights, he bowls in the Beer Belly Bob’s league at Hometown, where he also competes on Wednesday nights in the Lanthier’s Grove league. He averages 226 and 234, respectively, in those two circuits. Wigand rounds out his week in the Saratoga Spa five-man team league Saturday nights at Saratoga Strike Zone, where he carries a 218 average on the second shift.

But it’s at Hometown where Wigand really excels, especially in memorable games. Remarkably, he owns honor scores on every pair in that house. He’s rolled a perfect game on lanes 1 and 2, a 300 game and an 800 triple on lanes 3 and 4; another 300 game and an 800 triple on lanes 5 and 6 and the same on lanes 7 and 8. Wigand tossed a perfect game on lanes 9 and 10, 11 and 12 and 13 and 14. On lanes 15 and 16, he’s rolled both a 300 game and an 800 triple. He also has another perfect game on lanes 17 and 18. That works out to 10 perfect games and 10 800 triples at Hometown.

“I would say I’m a rev-dominant player, but I take a very short approach,” Wigand explained about his unusual delivery. “I take a step back for my timing, and then I take three steps to the line. I use Storm equipment, and my favorite ball is an Idol Pearl. I’ve rolled back-to-back 300 games twice with that ball.”

Wigand, a powerful right-hander, learned the game from his lefty father, a solid bowler in his own right.

“He was a big influence in my game,” Wigand said. “In fact, my biggest goal as a youngster was to surpass him in 300 games and 800 triples. He had 16 [perfect games] before he stopped, and I’ve got [31] perfect games and 17 800 triples right now.”

Wigand bowled on the Shenendehowa varsity team for three years. He collected his first 300 game at Spare Time Clifton Park. His all-time high triple is an 878 that he tossed in the Beer Belly Bob’s league on the final night of the league to secure first place for his team. He shot a perfect game in his opener and then collected another eight strikes to start the second game before leaving a 9-pin and finishing with a 278. He finished off with another 300 game.

There’s no question Wigand loves to bowl. He’s a great teammate, as well.

“He’s definitely a teammate who never worries about himself. He is always for the team,” said Ryan Karabin, who bowls with Wigand in the City League. “He always is willing to substitute and bowl any time he gets the chance to.”

Wigand’s achievements in league bowling are exceptional, but now he wants to improve his resume in tournament competition. He won a Northeast Bowling Proprietors of New York Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show tournament when he was 15 years old and also cashed in the New York State USBC Tournament a couple of years ago.

“I definitely want to win a tournament, and I mean a reasonable tournament with a good field,” he said. “This past weekend, I bowled in the Adirondack USBC Tournament and shot 2,213 for nine games. I’m in the top five right now.”

Wigand said he’s setting his sights on a couple of upcoming major tournaments, including the Donato Scratch Singles at Towne Bowling Academy and the scratch doubles event with Karabin at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center.

“My other goals are to roll a 1,100 four-game series [his current high is 1,065) and to maybe shoot higher than my 878 for three games,” Wigand said.
