The UAlbany football team was ranked No. 12 Monday in the HERO Sports FCS Preseason Top 25, marking the highest ranking ever for the program, while redshirt senior linebacker Levi Metheny was one of five Colonial Athletic Association players named to the HERO Sports FCS Preseason All-America Team.
Coming off a 9-5 season, a second-place finish in the CAA and the first FCS playoff win in program history in 2019, UAlbany’s No. 12 ranking bests the program’s previous high for any FCS poll, when the Great Danes finished at No. 15 in the final Athlon Sports FCS Power Poll of the 2019 season.
The Great Danes were one of six CAA teams ranked in the preseason top 25, along with defending league champion and 2019 FCS runner-up James Madison at No. 4, Villanova at No. 5, Delaware at No. 13, New Hampshire at No. 17 and Elon at No. 21. William & Mary was among four teams also receiving votes for the top 25.
Three of the CAA’s ranked teams are on UAlbany’s six-game schedule for the spring season. The Great Danes are scheduled to open their season March 5 at New Hampshire, while their final two regular-season games are April 3 at Delaware and April 10 at home against Villanova.
Metheny, a 6-foot-0, 239-pound linebacker, was named an All-CAA Second Team selection in 2019 after putting up a team-high 120 tackles — including a league-best 63 solo stops — along with 6.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Joining Metheny as CAA representatives on the preseason All-America team were James Madison offensive lineman Liam Fornadel, Richmond defensive lineman Kobie Turner, Villanova linebacker Forrest Rhyne and Delaware defensive back Kedrick Whitehead.
