ALBANY – State police in the Capital Region arrested 17 impaired drivers over Super Bowl weekend Friday to Monday, state police said.

The arrests by state police Troop G came as part of the special STOP-DWI enforcement campaign that ran from Feb. 5 to Feb. 8, troopers said.

As part of the same campaign, troopers issued 690 total traffic tickets, including 147 for speeding, 21 for distracted driving, 14 for failure to move over, and 17 for not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.

Troopers also responded to 60 traffic accidents, officials said.

Troop G covers 10 counties, including Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany, Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie.

The State Police are wising up by not announcing this campaign to crackdown on DWI ahead of time. In the past, this “heads up” policy allowed the drunken driver to avoid arrest by planning their route around designated police checkpoints.
