Niskayuna shut out Averill Park in the final quarter to cap a 62-30 Suburban Council boys’ basketball win Saturday and improve to 2-0.

That fourth-quarter zero was part of a 33-2 game-closing run.

“I thought we played solid defense the entire game, but we gave up some second-chance opportunities in the first half,” said Niskayuna coach Mike Grasso, whose team was up 29-28 in the third quarter before pulling away. “We cleaned up the rebounding and stayed with the same defensive principles.”

Niskayuna also protected the ball better in the second half, committing one turnover after collecting 13 in the opening two quarters.

“We took care of the basketball better and we rebounded,” Grasso said. “They were the keys to the game.”

Gabe Eldaye scored 15 points for Niskayuna. Jack Allen added 10 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter when the Silver Warriors outscored Averill Park 21-0.

Damari Holder scored 15 points, Chris Davis netted 13 and Jahsean Haggray added 11 to lift Schenectady over Columbia 69-66. Yim Strevell paced Columbia with 22 points.

Luke Britton generated 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, to help Saratoga Springs hold off Ballston Spa 60-56. Andrew Haight had 16 points for the Scotties.

Mason Courtney scored 22 points, Devin Dzikas had 20 and Luke Lavery put in 19 to ignite Shenendehowa’s 81-40 win over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Tim Marro had 13 for the Spartans.

Daily Gazette All-Area first-teammer Al Barnhill scored 23 points and reached the career 1,000-point mark in Mekeel Christian Academy’s season-opening 77-36 non-league win over Hoosic Valley. Barnhill came in needing two points to reach the milestone, and got it with an early jumper. Zahki Fallon had 15 points for Mekeel, and Chris Kane delivered 14.

Stillwater went on an 18-4 fourth-quarter run to get past Saratoga Catholic 61-46. Isaac Cutler scored 22 points for Stillwater, and Hayden Day notched 17 for the Saints.

Lauren Angelo and Sophie Bissaillon scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, and the Columbia girls got past Schenectady 54-47 in a Suburban Council matchup. Janessa Jones sparked Schenectady with 19 points, and Shylah Biegelow-Smith contributed 13.

Saratoga Springs defeated Ballston Spa 87-36 behind Katie Cleason’s 21 points and Natasha Chudy’s 17. Five Blue Streaks reached double figures in points.

Chloe Goverski clicked for 24 points, and Mechanicville held Schuylerville scoreless in the second quarter as part of a 69-24 non-league win.

Malley Mueller had 17 points as Stillwater beat Saratoga Catholic 40-38.
