FORT PLAIN — A woman from outside the local area was charged with attempted robbery after unsuccessfully trying to steal a cash register from Stewart’s Shops in Fort Plain Friday night, police said.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, an unarmed female entered the village Stewart’s and demanded cash from the clerk.

“The clerk advised her that she cannot open the cash drawer unless there’s a sale,” said Fort Plain Police Chief Ryan Austin.

She then, “attempted to grab the cash register and was unsuccessful,” according to Austin.

Utilizing eyewitness accounts, and working with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Canajoharie Police Department, the Fort Plain Police Department apprehended the suspect in the village 5 to 10 minutes after the attempted robbery.

As of Sunday afternoon, the suspect’s name had not yet been released, though Austin noted that she “goes by a couple different names.”
