SCHENECTADY – A Schenectady man drove drunk with a child in his car Sunday afternoon on Interstate 890 in Schenectady, state police said Tuesday.

Charles T. Murphy Jr., 51, of Schenectady, was charged with one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, a felony, state police said.

Troopers stopped Murphy for a series of traffic violations. They then could smell the odor of alcohol and saw signs of impairment and an open alcoholic beverage, state police said.

Troopers also saw a young child in the vehicle, state police said.

Murphy failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He then provided a breath sample that showed his blood alcohol content at 0.16, above the legal limit of 0.08, state police said.

Murphy is due in court next month.
