Second-half surge sends Quinnipiac past Siena women’s basketball

Through almost three quarters, the Siena women’s basketball team kept alive an upset bid on the road against Quinnipiac at People’s United Center in Hamden, Connecticut.

The last dozen minutes of the contest, though, belonged to Quinnipiac, which secured an 84-63 MAAC win.

Siena led 54-53 after a basket from Marilena Gerostergiou with 2:11 left in the third quarter. Quinnipiac, though, scored the quarter’s final nine points, and Siena trailed by as many as 24 in the fourth on its way to a fourth-consecutive defeat.

After Siena pushed to its 54-53 lead, Quinnipiac outscored Siena 30-10 in a stretch that included separate 11-0 and 15-0 runs.

Siena (2-6 MAAC, 2-6 overall) received a game-high 22 points from Isis Young, who returned to the Saints’ lineup after missing the team’s last two games because of COVID-19 protocols.

Margo Peterson added 13 points for Siena, Gerostergiou had nine points, and Rayshel Brown contributed eight points and five steals.

For Quinnipiac (10-3, 12-5), Mikala Morris had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Mackenzie DeWees also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Siena next plays Saturday at Saint Peter’s.
