Rough third quarter dooms Siena women’s basketball

The Saint Peter’s women’s basketball team put together a 21-7 run in the third quarter and held off Siena College afterward to post a 62-54 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win Saturday at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Siena (3-8, 3-8 MAAC) held a 30-28 lead entering the third quarter.

Amari Anthony was Siena’s lone double digit scorer with 10 points, and Tobulayefa Watts and Ashley Williamson both had eight points. Isis Young, who scored 26 points in Friday’s 66-58 loss to Saint Peter’s, was limited to seven points on 1-for-10 shooting from the field.

Marilena Gerostergiou grabbed 11 rebounds for Siena.

Ajia James paced Saint Peter’s with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Taiah Thornton had 14 points and 10 assists, Kendrea Williams had 12 points and Tyara McQueen added 10 points.

Siena (3-8, 3-8 MAAC) was 1-for-13 shooting from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point territory the game-altering third quarter, while Saint S Peter’s (10-13, 9-8) was 10-for-15 from the field. Saint Peter’s built a 12-point lead in the third, its largest lead of the contest.

For the game, Siena shot 17-for-50 from the field (34%), and Saint Peters shot 25-for-61 (41%) from the field.

Siena is scheduled to host Niagara Thursday and Friday.
