BALLSTON SPA – A Saratoga County Jail inmate assaulted four jail guards Saturday, sending two for medical treatment, Saratoga County Sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.
John J. Martino, of Verde Place, Saratoga Springs, was charged with four counts of second-degree assault, felonies, as well as misdemeanor forcible touching.
He is accused of being involved in a physical altercation with several members of the jail staff. Two officers were taken to Malta Medical Center for treatment. A sergeant and officer were treated at the facility for their injuries.
A release did not outline the incident further.
The new charges come after Martino was arrested in September on one count of second-degree robbery, a felony, and multiple misdemeanor counts related to allegations he entered a vehicle at his residence, displayed what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash and drugs from the victim, officials said then.
He then allegedly physically took a vape pen from the victim’s hand and exited, officials said then. The victim’s minor children were in the back seat. Investigators later determined the item Martino displayed was a BB gun, officials said.
The status of the September case could not be determined Tuesday evening.
Martino was arraigned on the new case and ordered back to the jail, held on $25,000 bail based on his new case.
