The basketball found him with little time left on the clock, and Schenectady sophomore CJ Gomez knew what to do with it — even if he was standing several feet behind the 3-point line.

“His feet were set, his eyes were on the rim and he didn’t hesitate,” Schenectady head coach John Miller said after Gomez delivered Schenectady a 69-66 Suburban Council boys’ basketball win Wednesday against Shaker with a buzzer-beating 3.

In Schenectady’s senior-night game at Pat Riley Sports Center, senior Jahsean Haggray starred with a game-high 32. Haggray scored 20 of his points after halftime, but Shaker made sure Haggray was well-defended on the game’s final play, which was set up after a Schenectady timeout with 10 seconds to play.

“But we played good team basketball and did what we were supposed to do,” Miller said.

That meant the Patriots found the open man — and Gomez “had his feet set, he was confident — he was deep — and he pulled it, and made it.”

Gomez finished with seven points for Schenectady, a “younger team” that improved to 6-4 on the season.

“It’s a good group to be around,” Miller said, “and the future is bright for them.”

Damari Holder scored a dozen points for Schenectady. For Shaker, Joseph Mariano and Joseph Mirabile each scored 18 points.
