The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ basketball team paid tribute to popular coach and teacher Matt Turner Friday evening with a brief ceremony, which was followed by a 69-28 win over visiting Schenectady.

Turner, who taught history at the high school for over 20 years and led its boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams, died unexpectedly last Friday at the age 47.

“There are so many good stories about him,” Burnt Hills coach Colleen Froschauer said. “He dedicated himself to kids in the pool and in the classroom.”

Burnt Hills player Emily Rabbitt had donned a warm up t-shirt with Turner’s name on the back at Wednesday’s home game against Columbia, and on Friday, all of the Spartans wore one.

“That was very cool,” Froschauer said. “Everyone wanted to join her. They came together.”

Rabbitt, who is a former student of Turner, and Peyton Felix, who swam for him in the fall, spoke before the game.

“They both had nice things to say,” Froschauer said. “Everyone speaks highly of him [Turner].”

Grace O’Connor scored 18 points to lead Burnt Hills, Callie Chevalier netted 15 points and Ella Blesi and Lucy Catalano added 11 and 10, respectively. Janessa Jones topped Schenectady with 21 points.

Rylee Carpenter scored 21 points, Meghan Huerter delivered 18, and a trio of other Shenendehowa players freached double digits in a 96-55 win over Albany.

Averill Park used its scoring depth to beat Guilderland 69-45. Siena-bound Valencia Fontenelle-Posson scored 31 points for Guilderland.

Sophie Bissailon scored 12 points, and Columbia edged Colonie 42-41.

Jaden Wilson and Anna Lee scored 13 points apiece as Johnstown beat Broadalbin-Perth 49-35 in a game matching Foothills Council rivals. Makenzie Smith scored 17 points for the Patriots.

Kerigan Groff’s 15 points lifted Northville to a 50-21 non-league win over Gloversville.

Lauren King scored 15 points, and Schuylerville used a 22-2 fourth-quarter run to get past Saratoga Central Catholic 48-42.

Stillwater defeated Galway 52-44 behind Marley Mueller’s 19 points.
