Winner Phil Drumm, right, of the Binghamton area accepts the trophy from Tommy Donato after winning the 18th annual Donato Scratch Singles tournament Sunday at Towne Bowling Academy.

The Capital Region bowling community came out in droves to support their favorite sport last weekend as local centers were full to capacity with several major events, including my favorite, the 18th annual Donato Scratch Singles tournament at Towne Bowling Academy.

The Donato Scratch Singles tournament is named in honor of the legendary Donato family, including Joe Donato, considered in many circles to be the greatest bowler in local history; his brother Nick, an outstanding ball-driller and exceptional lane conditioner; and Joe’s son, Tom, another superb bowler and high school coach. Traditionally, this tournament not only draws an extraordinary field, but it also is the most lucrative event ($3,200 for first place) on the schedule.

This year’s tournament was no exception. There were a total 327 entries, including roughly 100 from last year’s event that was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That field was whittled down to 63 bowlers, who rolled three more games in the semifinals under an extremely challenging lane condition. The top 16 then advanced to match play.

When the smoke cleared, a pair of Binghamton-area bowlers well known in this area squared off, with Phil Drumm beating James “JT” Thomas 203-180 in the championship match. Drumm, 32, is a veteran of regional scratch tournaments all over the state. He loves the greater Capital Region, having teamed up with Ryan Galli to win three local doubles tournaments. Thomas was also a regular in local events, especially in the now-defunct Northern Bowlers Association events.

“I come up here to this house every year,” said Drumm, who has won several major events in the Binghamton area and has also cashed in numerous PBA regional events. “I love this tournament. I’ve probably bowled in it for 10-12 years. I love supporting the family, and I love the bowling alley. It’s a great tournament with a great prize fund. Plus, Tommy [tournament director Tommy Donato] is a class act.”

Thomas, 46, is trying to bounce back after stepping away from the game for more than a year because of personal reasons. He started bowling in scratch tournaments again in January and now has two second-place finishes.

“We always came up and bowled in this tournament. Tom’s tournament was a never-miss for most of us,” Thomas said. “I knew ‘Senior,’ and I go back even when it was named after Joe D himself. I had a couple of top-four finishes when it was just the Joe D Scratch Singles. This is one of the tournaments that I really wanted to bowl.”

Thomas took home a check for $1,600. Of the 16 bowlers who advanced to the match-play finals, Nick Galusha of Altamont was the top local finisher, reaching the semifinals and losing to Drumm. Other area bowlers who advanced to match play included Craig Taylor of Rotterdam, Joe Mazuryk of Duanesburg, Ed Bauman of Johnstown, Dave Bosko of Green Island, John Askew of Duanesburg, Chad Sutliff of Glenville, Casey Schoonmaker of Ballston Lake and Del Picard of Brunswick.

All bowlers who didn’t qualify for the final 16 earned $120. The losers in the round of 16 cashed for $250, and the round of eight losers got $350. The round of four losers picked up $750.

Area bowling enthusiasts will remember Mazuryk, who once was the best bowler in the Capital Region before “retiring” for about three years to devote more time to his family. I have a feeling we may be hearing more from him after his performance this weekend.

Another highlight of the tournament was the performance of Jon Wilbur of Ticonderoga. Wilbur created a ton of excitement when he rolled a 300 game in the final game of the semifinals to earn the top spot for the match-play finals. He earned a $500 bonus for that feat, accomplished with nearly the whole bowling center cheering him on. But that kind of pressure is nothing new to Wilbur. The Vermont native became the first bowler from Vermont to roll a perfect 900 triple in January of 2019. At the time he was the 35th bowler to achieve that milestone.

Tournament director Tommy Donato, Tom Earl and the entire Towne Bowling Academy staff, led by proprietor Marty Capullo Jr., did a phenomenal job running the tournament, and a handful of great sponsors made the large prize fund even healthier.

By the way, like I said earlier, the area came out in full force on Sunday to compete in four big events. Besides the Donato Scratch Singles, 64 bowlers competed in the Town & Country Invitational, roughly 20 four-person teams participated in the Blizzard Bowl at Boulevard Bowl and Sportsman’s Bowl hosted its popular Tavern Tournament, which is another team event.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

The Schenectady USBC held a board of directors meeting Sunday night. One of the topics voted upon was to donate $500 in the late Frank Cornicelli’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Other SBA news included an announcement that nominations for the Schenectady USBC Hall of Fame are still being accepted until May 1. Since there will not be an awards banquet again this June because of COVID-19 protocols, anyone voted into the HOF this year will be announced after the next board meeting in June but won’t honored until the 2022 awards banquet.

Meanwhile, the Schenectady USBC Women’s Championship Singles Tournament will be held April 10-11 at Towne Bowling Academy at 2 p.m. each day. Handicap will be 90% of 240 and entry fee will be $25. Former PBA50 Player of the Year and Revolutions Pro Shop owner Brian LeClair finished 22nd in earned $520 in a PBA East Region tournament in Cheektowaga.

Matt Hill’s 867 triple included a perfect game and 32 strikes to set the house record at Hi-Way Recreation in Wynantskill recently. That mark appears to be safe, as Hi-Way Recreation will be sold at the end of this season.

Town & Country Lanes will host the John Drexel Memorial Doubles Tournament, with qualifiers April 11 at 9 a.m. and noon. There will be a maximum of 36 teams per shift. Entry fee is $130 per team, and one in six teams advance to the finals. This is a scratch event. The finals will be a seeded bracket with the top team from each shift getting the top seed. For more information, contact NYS USBC Tournament Manager Angelo Corradino (845-363-1374). There are already more than 130 teams and roughly the same amount of doubles/singles entries reserved.

Congratulations to Hoosick Falls High School product Erin McCart, who signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Delaware State women’s bowling program, which competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. McCart, a co-captain for the Panthers, competed on the team for six seasons. She was a multiple Wasaren League all-star and helped her team to win several league championships, a Section II Class C/D title and the second consecutive unbeaten Wasaren League season in a row.
