College roundup: Union College baseball pair win Liberty League honors

Union College senior slugger Kevin Chaimowitz and junior pitcher James Salemme picked up the first set of Liberty League honors of the year, named as Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced by the conference office Monday.

Chaimowitz hit .667 (4-for-6) with two homers, five RBIs, three runs scored, in Union’s two victories over Vassar on Saturday. He went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in the 8-1 game-one win, then hit a grand slam to open the scoring in Union’s 10-5 game-two victory.

Salemme was dominant in his first appearance of the season, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing only one hit while striking out nine in Union’s season-opening 8-1 victory over Vassar.

The honors are the first career weekly awards for both players.

The Dutchmen are slated to return to action on Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta.

UAlbany baseball’s Malm AE Player of the Week

University at Albany red-shirt junior infielder Brad Malm was named America East Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Malm, went 10-for-16 (.625) with three doubles, one home run, seven runs scored and six RBIs in a weekend series split with UMBC.

Malm won three Rookie of the Week honors in 2018; the Player of the Week was his first league award since.

UAlbany returns to action with two doubleheaders at Binghamton Saturday and Sunday.

UAlbany men’s lax Hogg AE Offensive Player of the Week

UAlbany sophomore attack Graydon Hogg was named America East Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Hogg led the Great Danes with a career-best six goals and one assist against UMass Lowell over the weekend, powering the Great Danes to a 17-6 victory over the River Hawks.

Last season, Hogg was named America East Rookie of the Week twice before the COVID-19 shutdown ended the season after five games.

UAlbany visits No. 9 Syracuse on Thursday.

Fleming NE10 Goalie of the Week

The College of Saint Rose sophomore Ryan Fleming, a Saratoga Springs High School graduate, was named the Northeast-10 Conference Goalie of the Week for the period ending April 4.

Fleming registered 38 saves, and an impressive 65.5 save percentage during the 1-1 week. The sophomore totaled a program single-game record 24 stops in Saturday’s 15-10 loss to No. 7 Adelphi. He allowed just five goals in 45 minutes while making 14 saves to earn the win in the March 31, 18-9 victory at American International.

Fleming was also named the NE10 Goalie of the Week on March 2.

Saint Rose is scheduled to play at #1 Le Moyne on Wednesday.

McCann Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week

Union junior attacker Keaton McCann earned Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week honors, the conference office announced on Monday.

McCann led the Dutchmen with six goals in Union’s season-opening 19-6 victory over Plattsburgh State University on Saturday.

This is the first career weekly honor for McCann. He was an All-Conference second-team and an IMLCA All-East Region honorable mention in 2019.

Union College, ranked No. 15 in the latest USILA DIII National poll, travel to face Skidmore College Wednesday.

Brown earns Liberty League tennis honors

Union College senior tennis player Megan Brown, who helped clinch a season-opening victory on Saturday, earned the Liberty League Singles Performer of the Week honor, the conference office announced this afternoon.

Brown provided the decisive fifth point in Union’s 5-4 victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

An All-Conference performer, Brown earned Union’s Sophomore Athlete Prize in 2019 and the ECAC Medal of Merit in 2020.

The Dutchwomen return to action on Saturday with a Liberty League match at Rochester Institute of Technology,
