After leading the CAA in tackles for loss and finishing second in the league in sacks despite playing just four games, UAlbany redshirt freshman defensive end Jared Verse was named the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year on Wednesday, and was one of three Great Danes to earn spots on the all-conference second team.
Verse had 10 tackles for loss and four sacks this spring for UAlbany, which opted out of the final two games of its regular season due to injuries. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound native of Berwick, Pennsylvania is the first UAlbany player to earn CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors since Julian Cox shared the award in 2015.
Earlier this week, Verse was named one of 16 finalists for the STATS Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, presented to the top freshman player in FCS.
Verse was joined as a second-team all-conference selection by senior running back Karl Mofor and senior linebacker Danny Damico.
Mofor led the CAA in rushing yards per game at 115.0 and led the league with 114 rushing attempts. He finished the year with 460 rushing yards and three total touchdowns — two rushing, one receiving.
Damico led UAlbany with 34 total tackles this spring, ranking third overall in the league. His 28 solo tackles ended the season as the CAA’s second-best total.
UAlbany went 1-3 prior to the premature end of it season.
