High schools: Niskayuna football closes season with victory

Dan Quinn scored on a 4-yard run, and Aiden Pendergast booted a 26-yard field goal as Niskayuna defeated Colonie 10-7 in a non-classification football game Wednesday night.

George Scott blocked a punt to set up Quinn’s TD, and a Cole Nappi interception set the stage for Pendergast’s field goal that broke a 7-7 tie.

Leo O’Brien’s second interception of the game with 20 seconds left sealed the win that left Niskayuna, which lost to Columbia in its previous game, at 3-4.

“We were happy to bounce back after last week and finish strong with this senior group,” Niskayuna coach Brian Grastorf said.

Bo Catherwood ran for 236 yards and six touchdowns on 29 carries to spark La Salle’s 44-6 Class A win over Queensbury.

Julia Reedy became Galway’s career leader in kills, putting down 12 to boost her total to 1,040, in a 25-13, 25-4 25-13 Western Athletic Conference girls’ volleyball win over Mekeel Christian Academy. Diana Colangelo had five kills, and Jayden DeVellis had 13 service points and four aces for the 15-4 Eagles. Chloe Ekstein had kills and nine assists for the Lions.

Hallie Gasner shined with nine aces and 15 kills in Middleburgh’s 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18 triumph over Schoharie.

Gloversville went to 11-0 in the Foothills Council and 14-0 overall with a 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13 win over Johnstown. Aireana Muhlberger had 30 assists for Gloversville, and Macey Salvione and Maddy Avery collected 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Hailie Phelps had 11 kills, and Bella Fuschino had 14 assists to lead Mechanicville past Saratoga Catholic 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16 in the Wasaren League. Molly O’Reilly served eight aces for the Saints.

Ben Pearce piled up 29 kills, and Aidan Calhoun amassed 53 assists to go with six kills and six blocks as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake outlasted Bethlehem 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24 in a boys’ Suburban Council tournament semifinal match. Bethlehem saved eight match points in the fifth set before Liam Calhoun’s serve was misplayed to end the marathon.

Burnt Hills will play at Shenendehowa in Friday’s title match after the Plainsmen defeated Columbia 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 in the other semifinal. Chris Bae and Tyler Christensen both had 11 kills for Shenendehowa. Burnt Hills and Shenendehowa split two matches during the regular season.

Austin John recorded a hat trick, and Brendan Ryan had the other two goals to propel Middleburgh past Mekeel Christian Academy 5-2 in a boys’ WAC soccer game. Eli Lilienthal scored both goals for Mekeel.

Katie Krohn scored three goals and assisted on another goal by Megan Krohn in Schoharie’s 5-0 WAC girls’ soccer win over OESJ.

Mia Biscossi and Joe Galarneau scored second-half goals to lift Mekeel Christian Academy past Duanesburg 2-1. Shannon Zink put the Eagles on the board in the first half.

Izzy Mancini had two goals and an assist on Stephanie Martin’s tally as Galway played to a 3-3 non-league tie with Hoosick Falls. Megan Perry scored two goals for the Panthers.

Lucy Crounse and Brooklyn Drago supplied the goals, and Kortney Clark made five saves, as Scotia-Glenville beat Broadalbin-Perth 2-0 in the Foothills Council.
