The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ lacrosse team scored 12 unanswered goals in the opening half, and went on to beat Guilderland 18-2 for Katie Kerner’s first victory as the Spartans’ head coach.

Kerner, who graduated from Shenendehowa in 2015 and won a national championship while playing at LeMoyne, had her first season with Burnt Hills in 2020 cut short when all spring competition was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It feels great to get the first one,” Kerner said.

Burnt Hills’ first-half scoring spree included a goal by MK Lescault 30 seconds in, and Allie Connally’s 100th career goal. Lescault would finish with six goals and an assist in the Suburban Council matchup, Connally totaled four goals and three assists, and Grace Tullock contributed four goals.

“I’ve got a lot of offensive weapons,” Kerner said. “I’ve got seven girls who can score, but at the same time, it’s a very selfless team. It’s a great group of girls.”

As a high schooler, Kerner had played on an all-star team under the direction of Guilderland coach Kara DePaula-Lynch.

“She was a mentor for me and we talk, but during the game, we had our coaching hats on,” Kerner said.

Kiaira Tomlinson hit her third home run in two games, doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored four as part of Broadalbin-Perth’s 14-13, eight-inning Foothills Council softball win at Gloversville. Celia Meher had four hits for Gloversville with two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored.
