The Edison Club in Rexford and McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton will jointly be hosting the girls’ state high school golf tournament from 2022-24 following a vote Wednesday in Section II’s favor by the Executive Committee of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
Bids to host the event were opened up after Deerfield Country Club in Brockport was offered an additional two years to do so after the 2020 and 2021 tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but declined.
“Our golf committee talked it over and we decided, ‘Let’s do it,'” Section II girls’ golf chairperson Eileen Troy said. “We have a tremendous group of volunteers and two great golf courses in McGregor Links and The Edison Club.”
While the girls’ state golf tournament was first held in 2006, Section II would have sent its first contingent to the event in 2020.
“I’m glad our girls will finally get a chance to go, and it’s in Section II which is really nice,” Troy said. “This is going to be great for the kids.”
Four sections made bids to host, and the Executive Committee voted 16-6 in favor of Section II as part of its quarterly meeting. Section V received the other six votes. Troy said the bid criteria included quality of facilities, finances, community support and surrounding amenities.
“When we do things in Section II, we do it first class,” Troy said. “We have a lot of people with a lot of experience in these matters. We know what we’re doing.”
The state tournament will include team and individual competition, and the 2022 event will take place the first weekend of June. State tournament qualifying for Section II will take place in the fall 2021 season.
