ROTTERDAM – Lisa A. Brown pushed her cart with some meat, gravy, cereal and other items down the Save A Lot parking lot to her car Thursday afternoon.
She was astounded and heartbroken to hear the store would only be open for about another two weeks.
“I’ve been shopping here forever,” she said. “Everybody loves this store, it’s the closest in the area.”
It also offered great pricing on products, she said.
The store will close May 22, although the company didn’t provide many details on why it chose to close this location.
“We take the decision to close any Save A Lot location very seriously and regularly review our stores on a number of factors,” said Sarah Griffin, the director of public relations and community engagement for the company in an emailed statement. “As part of this review, we made the difficult decision to forgo the renewal of the lease in our Rotterdam, NY store located at 1520 Altamont Avenue, and will close the store on May 22.”
Griffin did not return a request for additional details on the factors that led to the closing.
The location employs 13 people, said store Manager Nick Verderese.
He said employees were offered the option to take a severance package or relocate to the company’s store on Central Avenue in Albany.
Griffin said three employees will be transferring to that location.
“We are grateful to our customers and our team members for their continuous loyalty and support,” Griffin said. “We look forward to continuing to serve customers at our Albany or Troy locations.”
Verderese said the store sees a couple hundred people a day.
Many other shoppers, who wouldn’t provide their names, echoed Brown’s sentiments, noting while they didn’t shop there all the time it offered great deals on some smaller items they needed.
Brown said she won’t shop at the Price Chopper or Hannaford located just miles from the Save A Lot because they’re too pricey. She said she’s lucky enough to have a car to drive to the Albany location, but others in Rotterdam may not have that option. Shoppers who rely on public transportation could choose to use the bus stops along Altamont or Central avenues to reach the Albany location.
