FONDA — Stewart Friesen returned to Fonda Speedway on Saturday evening and dominated the $4,000 to win Sunoco Modified feature event. The race was the first of six Thunder on the Thruway Series events, which will be split between Fonda and Utica Rome Speedway.

Other winners Saturday at Fonda were Jason Greco (Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman), Nick Stone (Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks), Kyle Dingman (Montgomery County Office for the Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), and Ken Hollenback (SOHC) and Slappy White (DOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinders.

The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series were also on hand with John Flach (Modified), Stephen Denton (Sportsman), Bryan Scofield (Antique) and Curtis Condon (Late Models) taking the wins in the features.

Bobby Varin led early in the 35-lap Sunoco Modified feature, with Friesen close behind in second after starting third. Friesen took the lead on lap 10, getting by both Varin and a lapped car in turn one, and stayed in front for the remainder of the event.

Behind Friesen, a tough battle for second was contested between Varin, Mike Mahaney, Craig Hanson and Ronnie Jonson.

One caution slowed the field on lap 28, but Friesen still went on to score his 70th career win at Fonda and his second of the 2021 season. Varin, Mahaney, Hanson and Johnson completed the top five, with invader Matt Sheppard getting all the way up to sixth after starting 19th.

“I felt like I let all my local fans down last evening in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event at Darlington while running in the second position late in the race and getting caught up in a wreck,” Friesen said in victory lane. “I love it here at Fonda, we have a great race team, and the track was hammer down fast tonight, the fastest it’s been in a long time.”

The 26-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman feature started with Chip Constantino at the front while Greco, Tucker O’Connor, Tim Hartman Jr. and Cody Clark fought for second.

A lap 21 caution bunched up the field, and on the restart Greco was able to take the lead away from Constantino, with Hartman moving up two places into second. Greco led the remaining laps to claim his first Fonda win in the division ahead of Hartman, Constantino, Clark and O’Connor.

“This is amazing. I can’t believe it,” Greco said in victory lane. “It is a dream come true for sure. Chip [Constantino] drove a flawless race and I definitely needed that caution to have a chance at the win.”

Stone scored his second-straight win in the Algonkin Pro Stock feature, taking the lead at the drop of the green flag and leading the whole way. Kenny Gates, Ivan Joslin, Devon Camenga and Josh Coonradt completed the top five.

Dingman led every lap in the 15-lap Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman feature for his first career win in the division, followed in the top five by Jonathan Feagles, Clayton DuMond, Stephen Gray and Carter Gibbons.

Ken Hollenback was the overall winner in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division claiming the single overhead cam victory while second-place overall finisher White claimed the dual overhead cam victory. Brandon Tyler, Kerrie Hollenback and Jeff Tubbs completed the top five in the 12-lap event.
