ROCHESTER — Niskayuna High School graduate Aaron Whitley collected three of the University of Rochester’s 19 hits, and the Yellow Jackets scored early and often in a 19-4 win over Union College in the Liberty League championship baseball game Saturday at Towers Field.
Rochester scored three runs in the first inning, five in the second and three more in the fourth before Union got its four runs in the top of the fifth, an inning that saw Jack Koch hit an RBI double and Joey Palko and Matt Toy hit RBI singles.
Palko, a Shenendehowa graduate, was the lone Union player with multiple hits, collecting three singles. Colin Kelly doubled for Union’s other extra-base hit. Whitley had a double among his hits and scored three times.
John Moses and Joseph Rende also had three hits for Rochester (No. 1 seed, 24-8) and a combined six RBI. Moses launched a first-inning homer off Union (No. 2, 12-8) starter and loser Bryce Fournier.
Union came in with a five-game win streak that was capped by Wednesday’s 18-9 semifinal victory over Ithaca. Rochester beat Clarkson 13-8 in its semifinal game.
Rochester won the 2019 Liberty League tournament title, and Union captured the top spot in 2018, as well 2016 and 2014.
