BANGOR, Maine — The SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers couldn’t quite claw all the way back into this one.
Cobleskill was within 4-2 and 9-6 with plenty of innings left, but Husson pulled away with a five-run burst for a 14-6 victory in Game 3 of the North Atlantic Conference championship series on Friday.
The Tigers finished the season at 15-9, and Husson (22-7) will move on to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
The Eagles led 4-1 after the first inning and were up 9-2 through five, but Cobleskill chipped away at both deficits.
Eddie Garcia hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to cut it to 9-5, and an RBI double by Stephen Tejada made it 9-6.
That’s as close as it got from there, as Husson scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and put the game away with three in the bottom of the eighth.
Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons graduate Chris Kordziel went 3-for-4 for the Tigers, and Jayson Maxwell went 3-for-5 with a triple.
Tournament MVP Jackson Curtis drove in seven runs for Husson on the strength of four doubles in five at-bats, and Kobe Rogerson drove in four with three singles.
Maxwell, Kordziel and Devin Lewis (Cobleskill-Richmondville High) were named to the NAC All-Tournament Team.
Cobleskill’s 15-9 record represents the team’s best at the NCAA Division III level since the program moved to the NCAA from the NJCAA in 2008. The NAC Western Division Championship represents the program’s first conference title of any kind since the program won the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in 1985 while competing at the junior college level.
